The Rwandan construction industry is set for a significant shift as Mountain Ceramics Company Ltd, located in the Muhanga Industrial Zone, prepares to launch its products on the local market in January 2026. Following a $30 million investment, the factory utilizes locally sourced raw materials like clay and silica sand from Muhanga and Ngororero districts. Initially producing 4,600 square meters of floor tiles per day, the plant aims to scale production to 10,000 square meters daily to reduce the country’s reliance on imported construction materials.

MUHANGA – Rwanda’s drive toward industrial self-reliance has reached a new milestone as Mountain Ceramics Company Ltd announces it will officially begin selling locally manufactured tiles in January 2026.
The factory, situated in the Muhanga Industrial Zone, represents a $30 million investment. Construction began in 2020 and has already provided employment to over 100 people during its building phase. Currently, the facility is in an active production phase, stockpiling inventory ahead of its grand market entry next month.
Harnessing Local Natural Resources
The Managing Director of Mountain Ceramics, Eric Sabiti Bugingo, revealed that the factory’s competitive edge lies in its use of Rwandan raw materials. In collaboration with the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB), the company sources clay, silica sand, and specific minerals directly from the valleys and mines of the Muhanga and Ngororero districts.
"The mines board assisted us in identifying these resources. The clay from the surrounding wetlands, combined with silica and stones from this region, forms the primary raw material for tiles that were previously imported from abroad," Bugingo told IGIHE.
Production Capacity and Scaling
As the factory ramps up operations, it is currently focusing on floor tiles.
Initial Phase: Producing 4,600 square meters ($m^2$) of tiles per day.
Expansion Goal: Increasing output to 10,000 square meters ($m^2$) per day in the near future.
This surge in production is expected to complement existing local manufacturers, such as East African Granite Industries in Nyagatare, which has an annual capacity of approximately 273,000 square meters.
Strengthening the Construction Sector
The launch of Mountain Ceramics comes at a time of rapid industrial growth. By 2024, Rwanda counted over 1,300 factories, including 38 large-scale and 82 medium-scale enterprises specifically dedicated to construction materials.
By producing high-quality tiles locally, Mountain Ceramics aims to lower costs for developers and homeowners while contributing to the "Made in Rwanda" initiative, further narrowing the country’s trade deficit in the construction sector.
