The Nyabarongo wetland ecosystem is currently undergoing a historic transformation through two flagship initiatives: the Kigali Wetland Rehabilitation Project and the Nyabarongo II Multipurpose Project. These efforts aim to transition the area from a flood-prone, degraded marshland into a resilient green lung for Kigali and a powerhouse for Rwanda's energy and agriculture sectors. By combining nature-based solutions with large-scale engineering, the project is expected to protect over 220,000 residents from flooding, restore 491 hectares of biodiversity, and add 43.5 MW of clean energy to the national grid.

For decades, the Nyabarongo river system and its connecting wetlands (including Gikondo, Nyabugogo, and Kibumba) faced severe degradation due to industrial waste and unplanned urban expansion. Today, under the guidance of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) and the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA), these sites are being reclaimed as "living infrastructure."
The ongoing works focus on:
Flood Mitigation: Constructing sediment traps, weirs, and retention ponds to slow stormwater.
Eco-Tourism: Building over 50km of cycling lanes, walking paths, and recreational parks similar to the Nyandungu Eco-Park.
Economic Empowerment: Creating thousands of "green jobs" and preparing 20,000 hectares of downstream land for sustainable irrigation.
The success of the Nyabarongo projects relies on a strategic mix of local expertise and international engineering. Below are the primary companies driving the physical transformation:
1. Lead Contractor (Wetlands): Real Contractors Ltd ; Key Focus Areas: Managing the rehabilitation of four major wetlands (Gikondo, Rugenge-Rwintare, Kibumba, and Nyabugogo). They handle landscaping, hydraulic works, and eco-park infrastructure.
2. Joint Venture Partner: NPD Limited ; Collaborating on civil works, earthmoving, and the construction of flood-control systems and urban road interfaces within the wetland corridors.
3. EPC Contractor (Dam/Energy): Sinohydro (PowerChina) ; Key Focus Areas:Responsible for the Nyabarongo II Multipurpose Dam, including the 48m high gravity dam, the powerhouse, and the 19km transmission line.
4. Project Developer: Energy Development Corporation Ltd (EDCL) ; Key Focus Areas: A subsidiary of REG, overseeing the energy generation and grid connection components of the project.
5. Design & Architecture : Mass Design Group ; Key Focus Areas: Involved in the sustainable design of the ecosystem parks, ensuring they serve as both functional drainage and public social spaces.
As of early 2026, the wetland rehabilitation works have surpassed 75% completion, with full delivery expected by late 2026 and early 2027. This project stands as a testament to Rwanda's "Green Growth" strategy—proving that urban development and environmental conservation can exist in harmony.
