Securing the East: Muvumba Multipurpose Dam Surpasses 40% Completion Milestone

Located in Nyagatare District, the dam will stand 39 meters high and create a massive reservoir capable of impounding 55 million cubic meters of water. This capacity is specifically engineered to solve the perennial water shortages that affect the region during dry seasons. Additionally, the dam will act as a vital flood control mechanism, protecting downstream communities and infrastructure from the unpredictable flash floods common during the rainy seasons.

The impact of the Muvumba Dam extends far beyond storage. Its design is a "triple-threat" solution for regional development:

• Year-Round Farming: The project will irrigate approximately 11,000 hectares of farmland, allowing farmers to move away from rain-fed agriculture and produce crops—including rice, maize, and vegetables—throughout the year.

• Livestock & Domestic Use: The reservoir will supply 50,000 cubic meters of treated water daily for household use and provide a reliable source for 16 livestock tanks across the district.

• Renewable Energy: Integrated into the dam is a 1-megawatt (1 MW) hydropower plant. This facility will generate an estimated 6.94 GWh of clean electricity annually, which will be fed directly into the national grid.

Construction, led by Sinohydro Corporation, began in late 2023 and is progressing toward a targeted completion in late 2026. The project currently provides hundreds of local jobs and serves as a training ground for Rwandan engineering students.

As the structure rises, the Muvumba Multipurpose Dam is set to become a lifeline for nearly 800,000 residents, ensuring that Nyagatare remains a productive and resilient agricultural hub for decades to come.
