The project, implemented by Horeco (Horticulture in Reality Corporation), covers approximately 900 hectares and was developed under the Government Funded Irrigation program.
Unlike conventional irrigation systems, this initiative utilizes modern technologies adapted for hilly landscapes, including sprinkler and center pivot irrigation methods.
Sprinkler irrigation distributes water through ground pipes, spraying crops evenly, while the center pivot system rotates in a circular pattern to efficiently irrigate large areas.
Water is sourced from a nearby river, pumped into storage tanks, partially filtered, and distributed through three pumping stations depending on demand.
However, some challenges remain, as nearby communities sometimes use the same water for domestic purposes, raising concerns about water quality and health risks.
Farmers contribute through a cooperative system, paying monthly fees used for administration, security, and operational needs, while installation and electricity are covered by the government and maintenance is managed by RAB.
As Rwanda continues to modernize agriculture, projects like this demonstrate how innovation can expand farming into new terrains, while highlighting the importance of ensuring safe water access for surrounding communities.
